3D Laser Scanning Department Manager

Walter Schoel Engineering CompanyWalter Schoel Engineering Company (Schoel) is a 125 year old Civil Engineering and Land Surveying firm located in Birmingham, Alabama. Serving a diverse group of clients in varying industries, Schoel offers site development services including civil engineering, land surveying, environmental consulting, hydrology, and 3D laser scanning.

Schoel is currently looking for an experienced leader to develop and manage our 3D Laser Scanning Department. This person should possess a thorough knowledge of laser scanning technology and its application.  In addition, this person should have an understanding of the potential of laser scanning to bring the maximum value to the entire construction process from pre-project existing conditions to operations and facility/asset management, and should bring strong experience in business development including marketing, client relationship building and proposal preparation. This person should be able to develop and lead a team of experienced field and office personnel in managing and delivering high quality projects to clients.

Qualifications include: 

  • College graduate with relevant degree, preferably in Geomatics. P.L.S. or P.E. encouraged
  • Minimum of five years of laser scanning experience, including project set-up, site scanning, post processing and point cloud registration
  • Understanding of site control and error propagation
  • Proven experience in business and client development
  • Proven experience successfully leading and developing people
  • Ability to manage complex projects to successful completion
  • Confidence utilizing the latest technology and learning new technologies
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Professional and self motivated

ScanWorks Field Superintendent

 BASIC FUNCTION 

Supervise all field operations for Scanworks and all field crews. Responsible for providing 3D data collection and survey on-site for interpretation by office personnel.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  • Establish and implement procedures and standards that manage the flow of in information between field and office personnel.
    • Supervise proper workflow and behavior of ScanWorks field personnel while on-site.
    • Responsible for scan and survey data accuracy and completeness.
     
  • Manage the collection of on-site data using conventional survey methods combined with three dimensional scanning technology
    • Familiarization with conventional survey tools, i.e. total stations and builders levels, backsight setups, etc.
    • Ability to utilize Leica HDS 3000 3D laser scanner and data collection software
    • Understand proper computer data manipulation and transfer from computer to computer and via network
     
  • Perform the following survey party chief functions:
    • Closed traverse – ability to perform repetition based traverse in a construction or industrial environment.
    • Differential bench run – Differential elevation loop and ability to document properly.
    • Construction layout.
    • Calculating survey points based from provided geometry.
    • Ability to learn crossover methodology between scanning and surveying
     
  • Understanding construction and industrial layout with data collection
    • Communication with office personnel
      • Understanding of engineering needs onsite.
      • Good knowledge of project documents.
      • Working closely and communicating with CAD personnel assigned to project
       
     
  • General requirements
    • Possession of state issued current drivers license.
    • Ability to clear extensive background check.
    • Ability to work solely if required.
    • Lifting of fifty pounds or more required on occasion in conjunction with occasional, bending, stooping and crawling.
    • Ensure that applicant can pass drug screening on request
       
  • Provide and maintain field notes
  • Maintain all field equipment and ensure readiness for equipment to perform when needed.
  •  Travel will be required.
    • Field surveys
    • Off-site meetings
    • Crew supervision
     
  • Perform additional duties/assignments related to project as required by management. 
  • Availability to work overtime, including weekends, as needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE 

  • Completed high school or possess GED. 
  • Minimum 5 years of party chief  experience in construction and or an industrial setting.
  • Minimum of 4 years of scanning experience with Leica products such as HDS3000, HDS6100, Cyclone and Cloudworx
  • Fair communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Meridian Associates is seeking a CAD Technician for our growing New Jersey office.  We are seeking one or more individuals with surveying and/or design background for our 3D Laser Scanning Services Group.  The opportunity will include modeling and design drafting of field data collected using state-of-the-art 3D laser scanning systems.

Individual must have 3D experience in either MicroStation, AutoCAD or Revit.  Prior Laser Scan experience is preferred.  Specific discipline experience in mechanical piping, civil structural or architecture is a plus.
