by SPAR Point Group staff | December 22, 2011

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Autodesk announced today it has acquired certain technology-related assets from T-SplinesInc., a privately-held surface modeling software company based in Utah. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“The technology acquisition will strengthen our Digital Prototyping portfolio with more flexible free-form modeling and will help achieve even closer integration between industrial design and engineering workflows,” said Buzz Kross, senior vice president, Manufacturing Industry at Autodesk, in a statement. “T-Splines technology will benefit designers and engineers that require watertight surfaces for downstream analysis and manufacturing.”

According to the T-Splines web site, "T-Splines are a powerful computer-aided design surface with special properties, which improves upon traditional CAD technology while retaining compatibility." According the information there, T-Splines allow designers to add details only where necessary, create non-rectangular topology, edit complex freeform models, and maintain NURBS compatibility.

See the "What are T-Splines" page for more information.
