Metrology

Laser scanning is a valuable tool for taking accurate measurements in new and different ways. Measurements can often now be taken faster and more safely with the use of the latest technology. Take and string and total stations are being replaced by laser scanners that can rapidly acquire more information than many service providers and asset owners know what to do with. These stories relate directly to this practice of measurement and accuracy.

SPAR 2005 Applying Laser Scanning Technology to Support Nuclear Plant Modifications

SPAR 2005 Conference Presentation: Applying Laser Scanning Technology to Support Nuclear Plant Modifications

Nuclear Industry Case Study:  Advantages of Laser Scanning in Plant Modifications
The commercial nuclear industry is undergoing a renaissance which is driving the requirement for major component replacements and system modifications and upgrades to support existing plant life extension. In the recent past, it wasn't uncommon for utilities to self-perform such tasks internally. With industry deregulation and utility downsizing, these projects are more commonly outsourced now than ever. Nuclear maintenance outage durations have steadily decreased over the last decade, making many activities extremely schedule-driven. Schedule adherence, and the subsequent financial liability for missed schedule milestones, has become a critical factor in contractor planning efforts. The ability to ensure a task is correctly executed within the allotted schedule is invaluable considering the climate of the current market.
FANP utilizes a variety of advanced measurement technologies, including laser scanning, to support design engineering, component fabrication and project implementation. This presentation will address the advantages of incorporating these technologies into a nuclear project, the challenges associated with introducing new technologies into an industrial application, and the end result of a specific application.
